We’ve received many suggestions for removing the sticky residue from HRT patches—here are some of the top tips. If you have any other methods that have worked for you, let us know so we can share them with others.
- HRT Patches: After taking your old patch off, rub the old patch (sticky side) over the glue marks left on your skin, this can help to take off the remaining leftover glue.
- Soap and Water: Start with warm, soapy water and a washcloth. Gently scrub the area to lift off the residue. This is usually effective for mild sticky spots.
- Oil-Based Products: Apply a small amount of baby oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or even a bit of peanut butter to the sticky area. Gently rub the oil in, then wipe it away with a clean cloth. This helps dissolve the adhesive.
- Alcohol or Rubbing Alcohol Wipes: Use rubbing alcohol or alcohol wipes to break down the adhesive. Apply it to a cotton ball or cloth, and gently rub the sticky area until the residue is gone.
- Adhesive Remover Wipes: Specially formulated adhesive remover wipes are available in most pharmacies. These are designed to remove sticky residues left by medical tapes and patches. Follow the instructions on the packaging for best results.
- Lotion or Cream: Regular body lotion or cream can sometimes work to remove adhesive residue. Apply a small amount to the area, rub it in, and then wipe off with a cloth.
- Nail Polish Remover: If other methods don’t work, you can try using a small amount of nail polish remover (preferably acetone-free). Be cautious with this method, as it can be harsh on sensitive skin. Apply with a cotton ball, rub gently, and rinse the area with water afterward.
After removing the residue, make sure to wash the area with soap and water to remove any leftover product, especially if using oil or alcohol-based solutions, to prevent skin irritation.
