April marks Stress Awareness Month – a time dedicated to opening up conversations around stress, its impact, and how we can better support ourselves and others.
For women going through menopause, stress isn’t just something that sits in the background, it can significantly affect both physical symptoms and emotional wellbeing.
Hormonal changes during menopause can heighten the body’s stress response, meaning everyday pressures can feel more intense, overwhelming, and harder to manage. In turn, increased stress can worsen common menopausal symptoms such as poor sleep, anxiety, brain fog, and hot flushes. It can quickly become a cycle that feels difficult to break.
At Menopaus’ull we see this first-hand. Many women tell us they feel stretched, exhausted, and not quite like themselves but often don’t realise just how much stress is playing a role.
Understanding the Link
When stress levels rise, the body produces more cortisol. During menopause, as oestrogen levels fluctuate and decline, the body can become more sensitive to this stress hormone. This can lead to:
- Increased anxiety or low mood
- Disrupted sleep patterns
- Reduced resilience and energy levels
- Heightened physical symptoms
Recognising this connection is an important first step in taking back some control.
Small Steps That Make a Big Difference
Managing stress during menopause doesn’t have to mean making huge life changes. Often, it’s the small, consistent steps that have the greatest impact:
- Prioritise rest – even short moments of downtime matter
- Move your body – gentle movement like walking can help regulate stress levels
- Talk it out – sharing how you feel can reduce emotional load
- Set boundaries – protecting your time and energy is essential, not selfish
- Create calm moments – whether it’s a cup of tea in silence or a few deep breaths
Most importantly, be kind to yourself. This stage of life brings change, and it’s okay to adjust your pace.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Stress can feel isolating, but you don’t have to manage it on your own. Creating spaces where women feel safe to talk, share, and support one another is at the heart of everything we do at Menopaus’ull.
This Stress Awareness Month, we encourage you to check in with yourself. How are you really feeling? And what is one small thing you can do today to support your wellbeing? Why not come along to our next Menopaus’ull and make some new connections!
