When we talk about menopause one of the first things that often comes up during conversations are hot flushes, mood changes or sleep issues. But for many women one of the most frustrating and uncomfortable side effects of this stage of life is the increase in urinary and vaginal infections.
It’s something that isn’t spoken about nearly enough, yet it affects a huge amount of women and can very often have a deep impact on the quality of life. There is good news however – there are steps you can take to ease the discomfort and prevent those annoying infections coming back time and time again.
Why do infections become more common during menopause?
As oestrogen levels drop your body undergoes subtle but important changes:
- Thinner, more fragile tissues – the lining of the vagina and bladder loses elasticity and strength which makes it easier for bacteria to cause problems.
- Changes in natural bacteria – normally the vagina has a healthy balance of protective bacteria (lactobacilli). With less oestrogen these reduce and the risk of infection goes up.
- Reduced lubrication – dryness can cause tiny cracks or irritation creating an opportunity for bacteria to enter the skin.
This combination makes urinary tract infections and vaginal discomfort much more common. For some women these infections become recurrent which can feel exhausting and isolating.
Spotting the signs early
It’s important to recognise the symptoms quickly so that you can get the right help straight away:
- Burning or stinging when passing urine
- A frequent or urgent need to go to the toilet
- Pain in the lower tummy or back
- Cloudy, strong smelling or blood tinged urine
- Vaginal dryness, itching or soreness
If you notice these signs please don’t ignore them. Early treatment can stop an infection from worsening or coming back again.
Practical self-care tips:
Whilst menopause brings challenges there are positive steps that you can take to reduce your risk of infections and look after your intimate health:
- Drink plenty of water – staying hydrated flushes out bacteria and supports bladder health
- Choose cotton underwear – breathable fabrics reduce irritation and keep the area comfortable.
- Avoid perfumed soaps and wipes – the delicate tissues around the vagina are easily upset by fragranced products.
- Don’t delay going to the loo – holding in urine for long periods of time can allow bacteria to multiply
- Try vaginal moisturisers or lubricants – these can help with dryness and make everyday life more comfortable.
Getting extra support
Sometimes self-care alone just isn’t enough, especially if infections keep coming back. That’s when speaking to your GP is really important. They may suggest:
Antibiotics – for treating an active infection
Low dose antibiotics – in some cases to prevent recurrence
Local vaginal oestrogen – a low dose treatment that can restore the tissues of the bladder and vagina, reduce dryness and significantly cut down the number of infections you experience.
Remember – vaginal oestrogen is safe for most women and it works locally (stays in the vaginal area and not throughout the whole body) and can really help to alleviate and stop infections coming back.
