
HRT (hormone replacement therapy) can be a gamechanger for many women. It can stabilise mood swings, ease shot flushes, prevent night sweats and much more.
Great if you can take it, but what if you don’t want to or can’t take it? Or you want to take something in addition to it?
The good news is that there are some alternatives in the the form of phytohormone supplements. These herbal supplements can boost female sexual hormones usually due to the phytoestrogens they contain – these are weaker plant-based oestrogens that are like, but not quite the same, as those found in HRT.
For some women, phytohormone supplements can help ease a whole raft of perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms from bad sleep to vaginal dryness but knowing where to start can be a bit of a minefield – especially with exotic names like Black Cohosh and Shatavari!

Because of their oestrogen-like actions, we don’t know that phytoestrogens are safe for people who have, or have had, hormone-related cancer, such as some types of breast cancer.
There are a separate group of herbal supplements that can help called non-phytoestrogens. Although suitable and very useful for all women, they can be a especially helpful for some women who have been advised to avoid any hormonal or phytohormonal treatment, helping improve a range of menopausal symptoms such as low mood, brain fog and hot flushes without boosting oestrogen levels.
