Stepping into May - Understanding the wider benefits of walking
Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support your health and wellbeing, yet it can often be underestimated. During perimenopause and menopause regular movement can feel harder to prioritise as energy levels fluctuate, sleep is disrupted and motivation levels feel lower than usual.
The good news is that movement does not need to be intense to make a difference. Walking is a gentle and accessible way to support both body and mind while fitting easily into everyday life. This month in our newsletter we're focussing on the benefits of walking and why even small daily habits can have a powerful impact on overall wellbeing.
1
Walking supports mood and mental wellbeing
Walking can have a positive impact on emotional wellbeing by helping to reduce stress, improve mood and create time to reset mentally. Gentle movement encourages the release of endorphins while lowering stress hormones like cortisol.
For women experiencing anxiety, overwhelm or low mood a short daily walk can help you to feel calmer, clearer and more balanced.
2
A gentle way to support physical health
Walking is a low impact form of exercise that supports heart health, circulation, joint mobility and bone strength. It can also help maintain muscle tone and improve overall energy levels without placing excessive strain on the body.
Because it is accessible and adaptable, walking is often one of the easiest forms of movement to maintain consistently during midlife.
3
Just a few short steps can create lasting habits
National Walking Month encourages people to add just 20 minutes of walking to their day. Small changes such as a lunchtime stroll, evening walk or walking part of your commute can quickly all add up.
Building manageable habits is often far more sustainable than unrealistic goals, helping you feel healthier one step at a time.
