Oral issues during the menopause

The menopause can bring many unexpected issues along with it, this can also include unexpected changes to your oral health. From dry mouth to gum sensitivity - hormonal shifts - more particularly, the drop in estrogen, can affect your teeth and gums in ways that women are unprepared for. The good news? With the right care and awareness, these symptoms can be managed. Here are three key ways menopause may impact your mouth and what you can do to help treat any issues.

1

How hormones affect oral health

During menopause, falling estrogen levels can lead to dry mouth, burning sensations, gum sensitivity and even changes in taste. These symptoms are often overlooked but are caused by reduced saliva and weakened oral tissues. Less saliva means less protection against bacteria, raising the risk of gum disease. Knowing the signs to look out for and taking early action with good oral hygiene and lots of hydration can assist in healthy oral care.

2

Gum sensitivity and recession

Gums can become swollen, sore and even bleed more easily during menopause due to hormonal changes. As collagen breaks down, gums may start to recede, exposing the roots of the teeth and causing sensitivity. This isn't just a dental hygiene issue - it's hormonal. Using a soft bristle toothbrush, flossing daily and avoiding alcohol based mouthwashes can really help.

3

Managing dry mouth and sensitivity

Dry mouth and tooth sensitivity are fairly common issues linked to menopause. Less saliva means more plaque build up and can also cause discomfort when eating hot or cold foods. Try sipping water regularly, using a gentle fluoride rich toothpaste and sugar free chewing gum to boost moisture. Avoid acidic or sugary drinks, and speak to your dentist if symptoms persist.
